200 Clarendon Street Plaza, 2015

The Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto believes in a multi-sensory approach to the arts. His work is tactile, sensual and intended to change the perception of our bodies in relation to the surrounding environment. For this work, he utilized intersecting sections of Corten steel cut into organic shapes, the soft fabric of the hammock, and a living plant to create an artwork for the public to lie on and observe the skyline.

This piece was selected so people could relax, contemplate and enjoy their surroundings by laying on their back in the busy metropolitan plaza, a place where people normally scurry back and forth in and out of buildings. Neto's artwork invited you to stop the rush of daily activities to take the opportunity to observe the surroundings. I knew the artwork was a success when people began to gather around the sculpture waiting for their turn to have lunch on a hammock.
