Julio Le Parc & OSGEMEOS
Julio Le Parc and OSGEMEOS
Fortes, D’Aloia & Gabriel
Carpintaria, Rio de Janeiro
November 6 - December 28, 2019
OSGEMEOS’ work is most often characterized by a bold figurative style derived from painting on the streets of São Paulo. However, upon closer inspection the use of colorful patterns and geometric abstraction are evident in their backgrounds and the clothing worn by their signature yellow characters. Deconstructing the work of OSGEMEOS reveals an affinity to an artist of an earlier generation, Julio Le Parc. Not only in terms of the use of color and geometric abstraction but in the use of movement and the intention of breaking down the barriers that divide art and society. Further similarities can be seen in the large-scale immersive environments, which employ color, geometric shapes and moving elements. Demonstrating a mutual commitment to engage the public through marvel and surprise, the artists challenge the public’s perception by blurring the line between reality and illusion.
In establishing a dialogue between Le Parc and OSGEMEOS it is critical to consider notions of art and science. Contemplating the apparent distinction between Le Parc’s scientific approach and OSGEMEOS famously intuitive process. The exhibition highlights the formal and conceptual affinities shared by these artists. As well as question apparent distinctions between scientific method and artistic process. In order to be successful in science or in art one must combine research, intuition and most importantly, the freedom to experiment.
