Open Source

Mural Arts Philadelphia

Philadelphia, 2015

Open Source converted the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program into a platform for artists to develop participatory works of public art that addressed important issues impacting the citizens of Philadelphia. The invited artists engaged with community through diverse levels of interaction, from painting, spoken word, oral histories, workshops to skateboarding on sculptures. The engagement was fundamental to confronting a variety of issues such as mass incarceration, the environment and immigration. The access to Mural Art’s deep-rooted links to community resulted in artistic interventions that recognized and reflected Philadelphia’s unique urban identity. Continuing Mural Art’s long held tradition of empowering community members and artists to collaboratively raise awareness and promote discussion of pressing social issues.

Working with Mural Arts on Open Source changed my life. It was the first instance where I was able to bring together my ideas about engaging forms of public art to directly address important causes and work with those affected.
